Qatar was accused of deliberately overstating the number of fans

FIFA explained that the capacity of the stadiums announced before the tournament was not final, and published new official information about the arenas.

Organizers of the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar have announced the first attendance figures for the tournament. A number of publications, including Talk Sport, called them overpriced.

According to the information announced by the organizers, the opening match between the hosts Qatar and Ecuador (0:2) was attended by 67,000 fans. However, the capacity of the stadium where the game took place, “El-Baita” in El-Haura, is limited to 60,000 seats, according to information announced before the start of the World Cup.

Subsequently, a similar situation was repeated with the numbers of the second competitive day. The meetings between England and Iran (6:2), Senegal and the Netherlands (0:2) and the USA and Wales (1:1) were held in 40,000-capacity arenas. However, official data on the number of spectators at these matches exceed the number of seats in the stadiums.

The official number of spectators at the 2022 World Cup
Qatar – Ecuador (“El-Bait”, El-Haur, 60,000 seats) – 67,372 spectators
England – Iran (“Khalifa”, Doha, 40 thousand) – 45,334
Senegal – Netherlands (“El-Tummama”, Doha, 40 thousand) – 41,721
USA – Wales (“Ahmed bin Ali”, Ar-Rayan, 40 thousand) – 43,418
How the organizers explained these differences
FIFA representatives provided a comment on this matter to BBC journalist Rachel Bearden. It was explained to her that the declared capacity of the arenas in Qatar corresponds to the figures specified in the FIFA requirements, and the final information on the number of seats is actually higher.

Another reason for the discrepancy could be that the organizers take into account the number of tickets sold instead of the actual number of spectators in the stands.

Subsequently, FIFA published the “official stadium capacity of the 2022 World Cup”, which indicated significantly higher figures than those announced before the start of the tournament. In particular, according to new information, “El-Bayt” accommodates 68,895 spectators, not 60,000.
